Ultrasound Technician Education

Ultrasound technicians are a valuable part of the medical workforce. They handle the sophisticated sonography equipment that is used to map a patient’s internal organs through the use of sound waves. The images obtained by an ultrasound technician can be used to diagnose a serious condition and can end up saving lives.

Ultrasound technicians are required to go through several levels of training before they can get a job at a hospital or a private clinic. Most universities and community colleges offer accredited programs that provide a degree to graduates, and even some hospitals and the US military provide training programs in every state. To be admitted for an ultrasound technician education, you’re normally required to have a background in math, health, natural science, and/or elementary physics.

Once enrolled, you’ll be taught the fundamentals of physics, physiology, anatomy, medical ethics, and proper patient care. All of these will come into play during your career as an ultrasound technician. An ultrasound course takes between one and two years, depending on the degree that you’re going for.

It’s important to ensure that your course is accredited by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or ARDMS, before beginning. There are currently 176 registered ultrasound training programs in the United States that are recognized by the ARDMS. Your job outlook will depend on your degree as well. There are more opportunities available with higher pay for a Bachelor in Sonography, but you’ll be required to take more training than if you are getting an Associate’s degree instead.
