Medical imaging—or radiology, if you prefer the technical title—is an ever-burgeoning field. It used to be that medical imaging, via X-rays or ultrasounds, was done only in hospitals. More and more, it’s becoming common in private practices, and even in independent imaging centers. Naturally, this means that there are more and more medical imaging machines out there—and with an increase in equipment comes an increase in need for people who know how to use that equipment. Indeed, work for medical technicians and supporting staff members is growing more fruitful and abundant all the time, and that includes work for ultrasound technicians.
Does that sound good to you? If it’s a career field you’re interested in, the first step is to pursue the proper education. A high school degree is necessary, but that probably goes without saying. After that, you should look for an ultrasound tech school and think about the different kinds of programs that are available. Indeed, ultrasound technologist programs are fairly abundant, and they offer many options. Know what these options mean for you, both now and in your future.
The only real necessity for gaining employment is ultrasound technician certification; there are plenty of ultrasound technician certification programs out there that that offer just the basics. A certificate can be gained in just a year or so, and will give you the bare essentials of what it means to be an ultrasound technician.
This is enough to qualify you for employment, of course, but, the more learning you have, the more likely you are to land a really great, high-salaried job. That’s why getting an ultrasound tech certificate, while adequate, is not the highest recommendation. The most common form of ultrasound tech certificate training is not for a certificate at all, actually, but for a full two-year associate’s degree. You can find this training online, or at most community colleges and even many universities. This degree will prepare you for a better, higher-paying job than a certificate would.
But there is an even more advances option, too. You can consider getting a four-year bachelor’s degree, which will, of course, go into even greater detail and depth as to what this field entails. Four years is obviously a bit of a commitment, but, if you want to qualify for the best, highest-paying jobs, this is the option for you.
After you complete the program of your choosing, you will be qualified for certification—though typically, a year or so of clinical practicum is necessary. Whichever path you choose to go, know that this is a challenging and exciting field, and you will be making a big difference while ensuring that you have everything you need for steady, secure employment.
