Going to ultrasound technician school is a choice that will provide many different career avenues for you to choose from later in life. Every hospital and most private clinics require several ultrasound technicians to be present, and the demand continues to grow with each passing year. As an ultrasound technician, you'll be responsible for not only operating the ultrasound equipment and analyzing the images, but working directly with patients and explaining everything that they need to know. There is no standalone ultrasound technician school, but most universities offer an accredited course to train young aspiring ultrasound technicians. There are nearly 200 courses in the United States currently that are recognized by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or ARDMS. Many hospitals offer their own training courses, allowing you to work on premises as you learn all the techniques. This can give you a jump start in your new career as an ultrasound technician.
Your ultrasound education will typically run either one or two years for a full degree. You have the option of becoming an Associate or a Bachelor in Sonography, and each degree type will open a different set of possibilities for your future career. For a high salary, great benefits, and solid job security, there are very few careers that beat a career in the medical industry, and ultrasound technicians are one of the most important parts of the team.
